Hidden Star Wars -- Wednesday, September 29th at 7pm
Experience Star Wars like never before with this thrilling insider's peek at one of the most treasured film series in the galaxy via a collection of film clips. Hear hilarious inside jokes, secret references to other Star Wars films, and dozens of other exciting moments included by the filmmakers for die hard Star Wars fans! This program is for adults and teens. For our kids' Star Wars program, please register for "May the Force Be With You" on October 14th.

Lymphedema: How Does Your Posture Affect It? -- Thursday, September 30th at 7pm
What is lymphedema and how does your posture affect it? Discover an overview of what lymphedema is, signs and symptoms, and types of people that it affects. You'll also learn how posture can improve lymphatic flow and exercises to achieve this.

Strategic Communication Planning -- Monday, October 4th at 7pm
Follow this strategic planning roadmap and clearly see all the steps needed to make your projects successful. Leave this workshop with the knowledge needed to construct a winning plan.

Investing for the Totally Confused -- Thursday, October 7th at 7pm
Are you totally confused when it comes to investing your hard earned money? Maybe even a little apprehensive? If so, this financial seminar is for you!

Armchair Travelers: South Africa -- Friday, October 8th at 1:30pm
Bill Helmuth will guide you on a tour of “The Soul of South Africa.” Visit the remarkable cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, see the beauty of the countryside, and learn more about South Africa’s history and people.

TEENS

Hidden Star Wars -- Wednesday, September 29th at 7pm
Teens and adults are invited to our Hidden Star Wars program! For a full description, please see above.

Teen Book Club -- Tuesday, October 5th at 7pm
Join us as we discuss Numbers by Rachel Ward. Books are available at the library for check out. New members are welcome! For teens in 6th grade and up.

KIDS

Bat Bear Craft -- Saturday, October 2nd at 10am, 11am, OR 12pm
Build a Bear! Noah's Ark Animal workshop. Make your own bear in a cute Halloween bat costume. Fee: $11. To secure your on-line registration, fee must be paid within three days at the library.

Reptile Club -- Sunday, October 3rd at 6pm
Join us as we learn about reptiles through a variety of fun activities. For grades 2 and up. Registration required.

Halloween Craft -- Tuesday, October 5th at 4:30pm
Create your own Frankenstein, Count Dracula and a Witchy Black Cat picture frames.(Participants may bring pictures to place in frames before final gluing.) There is a $3.00 fee for this craft. To secure your on-line registration, fee must be paid within three days at the library.

Magic Treehouse (Polish Program) -- Wednesday, October 6th at 6:30pm
Do you like traveling through time and around the world? Join Jack and Annie Travel Pals for a fun filled adventure, exciting games and your own Master Librarian card. This program will be in Polish and English.

Culture Club: Hawaii -- Saturday, October 9th from 10-12pm
Aloha! Visit a tropical paradise that is home to the world's most active volcano, sandy beaches and lush valleys! Dress Hawaiian style and join us for this cultural experience. Grades 3 and up. Registration required.

Upcoming! Teen Open House!
We are excited to announce that our second annual Teen Open House will take place on Tuesday, October 19th from 6-8:30pm! Teens are invited to hang out at the library and take part in a bunch of activities such as decorating a sweet treat, spinning the krazy wheel, eating yummy pizza, and rocking out to local band When In Doubt! We will also be doing a 60 Second Showdown (based on the TV series Minute to Win It!) that teens can participate in or watch. To participate, teens must fill out a registration form in advance and turn it in at the library. Please note that only the first 24 teens will be allowed to take part in the showdown, so please sign up early. For more information (including the 60 Second Showdown registration form), click here! So mark your calendars! Bring your friends! Get ready for food, fun, and live music! See you there!

Mystery Book Discussion --Monday, September 13th at 7pm

Adult Book Discussion -- Wednesday, September 15th at 7:30pm
This month's selection for the Adult Book Discussion is Moloka'i by Alan Brennert! If you are a member of the group and have not yet received your copy of the book, please contact Alex at (708) 301-7908.

Author Fair -- Monday, September 20th from 6-8:45pm
Meet the people behind the stories! Throughout the night, local authors will give short talks discussing their books, writing methods, and/or publication process. All authors will have tables throughout the library, at which they will sell and sign their books and also answer questions from patrons. Authors of childrens, teen, and adult books will be at the Author Fair: Luisa Buehler, Fern Schumer Chapman, George Kulles, Esther Mackey, Helen Osterman, Henry Perez, Paul Scheiner, Jennie Spallone, Kristina Springer, and Lee Williams. This event is a true celebration of reading and writing, so we hope to see you there!

College Planning Workshop -- Tuesday, September 21st at 7pm
College Funding Strategies will host a free college planning workshop for parents of high school students. This session concentrates on helping your high school student pick the right college while causing the least impact on your family's finances.

Chick Lit Book Discussion -- Tuesday, September 21st at 7pm
Join us as we discuss the The Wife's Tale by Lori Lansens. Books are available at the library for check out. New members are welcome!

TEENS

Teen Manga Group -- Thursday, September 16th at 7pm
This month we'll be watching some new anime sent to us by Operation Anime! There will be snacks, of course, and we will be discussing ideas for future meetings too. For teens in 6th grade and up.

KIDS

Fall Craft -- Tuesday, September 21st at 4:30pm
Come in and make a cute scarecrow craft for fall! There is a $3.00 fee for this craft. To secure your online registration, fee must be paid within three days at the library.

Costume Swap -- Saturday, September 25th (9-3pm with swap ticket; 1-3pm open to the public)
Donate a cool costume and shop at our 2nd annual Halloween Costume Swap! For every gently-used costume you donate, you will receive a ticket to shop the Costume Swap on Saturday, September 25th from 9am-3pm. You will be allowed to choose one costume for each costume donated. Donate an accessory to choose one from the accessory table! Open admission will be Saturday from 1-3pm (no ticket required). Monetary donations accepted for each costume and/or accessory during this time only (all donations accepted to be used for children's programming). Costumes and accessories of all sizes will be accepted September 7th - 23rd. Not interested in swapping? We will gladly accept any costume you wish to donate! No children will be allowed in the meeting room during the swap, due to space limitations. Selection and sizes cannot be guaranteed. Any remaining costumes after the swap will be donated to a local charity. Please contact the Childrens Department with any questions!

Bookmobile Event: Illinois Archaeology Awareness Month
Dig it! September is Illinois Archaeology Awareness Month! To celebrate, the Bookmobile encourages enthusiasts to come and help uncover the past. A mock excavation and keepsake artifact for kids, books and resources for all ages, and YOU are all that is needed to make this expedition a success! Prairiesmoke Writers Group -- Wednesday, September 8th at 7pm
Stop by the monthly meeting of the library's writers group! You're invited to discuss your work with other writers and have fun with some group writing assignments. New members are welcome! Writers of all levels are encouraged to attend. Registration is not required.

Armchair Travelers: Bali -- Friday, September 10th at 1:30pm
Join photographer and world traveler Michael Gauer as he takes you on a tour of Bali. Through color photographs and personal narratives, you’ll discover the beauty and culture found on this “little island of enchantment.”

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a library group for high school students looking to influence the library's teen services. Meetings include discussions of books, programs, and other library topics. One hour of community service is given for each TAB meeting attended. For teens in 9-12th grade.

Sunday Hours
Summer is almost over and you know what that means -- the return of Sunday hours at the library! Starting September 12th, the library is open from 4-8pm. End your weekend with a fun trip to the library! As a reminder, we are also open Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-9pm, on Friday from 8:30am-5pm, and on Saturday from 8:30-4pm.

Author Fair & Interviews
The Homer Library is excited to announce that our 5th Annual Author Fair will be held at the library on Monday, September 20th from 6-8:30pm. Meet the people behind the stories! Throughout the night, local authors will give short talks discussing their books, writing methods, and/or publication process. All authors will have tables throughout the library, at which they will sell and sign their books and also answer questions from patrons. Authors of childrens, teen, and adult books will be at the Author Fair. Want to know a little more about the authors who will be attending? You can check out our short interviews with Fern Schumer Chapman, Kristina Springer, Paul Scheiner, George Kulles, Helen Osterman, Lee Williams, Henry Perez, and Luisa Buehler. Interviews wilth Esther Mackey and Jennie Spallone are forthcoming! This event is a true celebration of reading and writing, so we hope to see you there!

* Library Closed: Monday, September 6th

In observance of Labor Day, the library will be closed on Monday, September 6th. Bookmobile service will also be suspended for the day. We will reopen Tuesday morning at 8:30 am.

And as a reminder, the library will be open on Sundays from 4-8 pm beginning Sunday, September 12th!

When the library is closed, you can still:

+ chat online with a librarian through our ASKAWAY service
+ use our library databases
+ search our catalog.
