This month we'll be reading Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny! New members are welcome!

Medicare -- Friday, April 8th at 1:30pm
The program will discuss Medicare Parts A & B along with Medicare Supplement plans. This program is for you if you are approaching 65 and preparing for Medicare, already on Medicare and interested in receiving a review of benefits, or caring for your parents or others on Medicare.

No More Bad Hair Days -- Monday, April 11th at 7pm
Hairstylist Peggy will show you how to create causal and formal hair styles and discuss the best tips to care for your hair. She will show you hair extensions, eyelash extensions and curling with a flat iron, as well as address your hair questions.

ESL Class -- Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30pm
ESL Classes for Adult Language Learners offered free of charge. Workbook will be provided. Registration is required. 2011 adult literacy programs are made possible by a grant from the American Library Association and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

Prairiesmoke Writers Group -- Wednesday, April 13th at 7pm
Stop by the monthly meeting of the library's writers group! You're invited to discuss your work with other writers and have fun with some group writing assignments. New members are welcome! Writers of all levels are encouraged to attend. Registration is not required.

Armchair Travelers -- Friday, April 15th at 1:30pm
Sonia Lawrentz will take us to St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel, the castle Sant'Angelo and more. Then we will travel out of Rome to Venice, a truly magical town. A light refreshment will be served.

Join us as we talk about Lockdown by Alexander Gordon Smith! For teens in 6th grade & up.

Teen Movie -- Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30pm
Bring your friends to the library for special teen-only showings! Enjoy popcorn while watching the best teen movies on our big screen. Please call the library for the movie titles and length. For teens in 6th grade and up.

Babysitting Class -- Thursday, April 14th from 5-7:15pm
Certified instructor will teach babysitting basics. $20.00 fee for this program may be made in person at the library within 5 days of registration. Payment may also be made on E-Pay. This payment method is located on the left hand side of the library webpage. Please bring a small stuffed animal or doll to class. Take home information will also be provided. Students must be 10 years old and up.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting -- Thursday, April 14th at 7pm
The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a library group for High School students. Member have an opportunity to influence the library's teen services. Meetings include discussion of books, programs, and other library topics.

Reader's Theater -- Saturday, April 9th from 10:30am-noon
Reader's Theater is a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script form. Readers read from a script and reading parts are divided among the readers. The focus is on reading the text with expressive voices and gesture. No costumes needed. Props will be created by the actors and each play is performed at the end of each session. For kids ages 8-13. Registration required.

Family Movie -- Sunday, April 10th at 4:30pm
Gather up the family and head down to the library for Family Movie Night! We'll provide the popcorn and drinks. Please call (708) 301-7908 for movie title and length.

Easter Craft -- April 12th at 4:30pm
Hop over to the library and make an Easter craft. There is a $2.00 fee for this program. Payment made be made in person at the library within 5 days of registration. Payment may also be made on E-Pay. This payment method is located on the left hand side of the library webpage.

American Dream Spring Fling -- Saturday, April 16th from 11am-1pm
The American Dream starts @ Homer Library! The Food Mercenary, Chef Michael Niksic, returns to the library to prepare and share exotic dished from Asia Mexico, Poland and the Middle East. For children, there will be bilingual story times in Polish and Arabic along with craft projects to round out this fabulous family event. Registration is recommended! This event is made possible by a grant from the American Library Association and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

The Chicks Are Here!
We are very egg-cited to announce that the chicks have returned! We have 18 eggs -- Leghorn chicken eggs & a few others! -- in an incubator & we are patiently waiting to see when they will hatch (the estimated length of time they will spend in the incubator is 21 days). We are planning a bunch of activities, such as crafts, a family movie, & contests, to celebrate! To see the eggs, stop by the library to view them in our brand new clear incubator, or you can view them from home on our live feed (coming soon!).

Geek of the Week
We want to know...what do you geek? (Don't know what we mean by "geek"? It's something that you are passionate about, like books, baseball, or bicycles!) In partnership with the Homer Horizon, there will be a new feature article called "geek of the week." We are looking for library users to star in this weekly feature. We will need to take your picture and you can tell us what you geek! To participate, ask for Alex or Patti the next time you are in the library!

The Return of the Chicks!
Due to the generosity of the following sponsors, we were able to purchase a new incubator, which means the chicks are returning to the Homer Library! We would like to thank Animal Care Clinic, Ludwig's Feed Store, Homer Township Vision Center, Tiffany's Kennels, & several anonymous library patrons for their sponsorship. Chicken eggs will arrive on Wednesday, May 4th. Like last time, we will have a live feed for you to view the eggs from home. We are very egg-cited & hope that you are too!

Federal & State Tax Forms
We have several federal and state tax forms available at the library! They have been relocated from the front of the library to the end of the adult non-fiction section. If you need help finding a certain tax form, ask for assistance at the Help Desk, where staff is happy to help you locate what you need.

Lincolns For Your Library
Looking for a quick way to support the Homer Library? Donate your spare pennies to our Lincolns For Your Library fundraiser! There are jars located at the Circulation and Help Desks where you can toss in your spare change. Monies collected will help support the Summer Reading Program. Last year, we were able to use the money gathered through this fundraiser to purchase prizes including a Tommy Bahama beach chair, a Netflix membership, an iTunes gift card, and a Borders gift card! Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Tween Club: Journal Notebooks -- Tuesday, February 8th at 4:30pm
Join the Tween Club for kids in grades 3rd to 5th. This month we will be creating a journal notebook. In March join in the discussion of a book that the group picks in February. Light refreshments will be served.

Babysitting Class -- Thursday, February 10th from 5-7:15pm
Certified instructor will teach babysitting basics. $20.00 fee for this program may be made in person at the library within 5 days of registration. Payment may also be made on E-Pay. This payment method is located on the left hand side of the library webpage. Please bring a small stuffed animal or doll to class. Take home information will also be provided. Students must be 10 years old and up.

Family Movie: Sunday, February 13th at 4:30pm

Sing Song & Yoga -- Friday, February 18th at 10am
A unique program designed for children and their caregivers using music, song and yoga. Ages 3 and up. Space is limited, so registration is required.

Bookmobile Event: Feed Your Need For Film

Due to a system-wide software upgrade, the library’s catalog and user accounts will be down after 8pm on Sunday, January 16th and all day on Monday, January 17th.

We will be open on Sunday from 4-8pm with a fully functioning system, so come on in and see us! The library is closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, so please note that any materials left in the outside book drops after 8pm on Sunday will be checked in on Tuesday morning at 8:30am (when our system is back up) without a late fee occurring.

Tax Forms
Due to mid-December tax revisions made by Congress, tax forms and instruction booklets are being sent out later than in past years. The library currently has a limited number of tax forms and instructions, which we are making available as soon as we receive them. You can, however, print out forms on the IRS's website, found here. You can also request forms to be sent directly to you from the IRS; more information is here.

Did you get an eReader as a holiday gift? If so, you'll be happy to know that the Homer Library offers access to a catalog of eBooks and audiobooks through Omni Libraries. Gift Bag Decorating Session -- Tuesday, November 16th from 4-8:30pm (drop-in)
Are you a teen looking for service hours? Throughout the holiday season, the library will be selling handmade decorative gift bags to our patrons. We will be holding decorating sessions where teens can help create these festive bags. No crafty or artistic ability needed! Teens do not have to stay for the entire session (if you can just do one or two hours, that's fine with us!). For teens in 6th grade and up.

Youth Activity Committee Meeting -- Wednesday, November 17th at 4:30pm
The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a fun group that undertakes projects and volunteers for community events. New members are always welcome. Get into the DIY spirit! Participants will view examples of zines (self-published mini magazines), learn how to create their own zine, and contribute to a zine we'll make at the workshop. For teens in grades 5-8.

Join us for our monthly celebration of all things manga and anime! Each meeting is different (sometimes we'll watch anime, play a manga-related game, recommend our favorite manga series, have a cosplay party, etc.) but it's always FUN! For teens in 6th grade and up.

National Game Day
Stop by the library on Saturday, November 13th to celebrate National Gaming Day! We'll have gaming during open library hours. There will be board games for all ages, Super Mario Kart in the teen section, and lots of fun! This is a drop-in event, so no registration is required. Game on!

Holiday Fundraisers at the Library

Throughout December, the library will be holding various holiday fundraising events. Patrons can purchase homemade gift bags decorated by trained teen volunteers or have their presents wrapped by volunteers for a small donation. It's a chance to get going on your holiday to-do list and support the library at the same time! Gift bags will be available for purchase at the beginning of December, and gift wrapping sessions begin on December 9th. Thank you for your support!

November is Food For Fines Month!
From November 1st to 30th, Homer Library patrons can pay off library fines with food instead of cash! Bring in one non-perishable food item and we'll waive $1 off existing fines or returned overdues. Paying for late fees for InterLibrary Loan items and replacement fees of lost items is not included in this offer. Up to $20 in overdue fines will be waived for each donation from the following list of acceptable items:

+ 8 oz. or more can of fruits or vegetables+ 6 oz. or more can of meat, fish, or poultry
+ 10.5 oz or more can of soup (no packaged soup or ramen, please)
+ 1 box pasta, rice, or dried beans
+ 12 oz. or more box of cereal
+ 8 oz. or more jar of peanut butter

Offer valid only during the month of November. Only non-perishable, undamaged, unexpired, and labeled items will be accepted. Additional donations are welcome. All donated food will be given to local food banks for distribution. Thank you for your support!

A New Home For Our Guinea Fowls
Hopefully you were able to say hello to the three guinea fowls that hatched at the library! We housed the little guys for the past two weeks, but now they are too big to keep here. The Homer Glen farmer who gave the eggs to us will be raising them as they grow bigger! Check back in the Spring of 2011 for more egg-citing chick adventures!

The Guinea Fowls are Hatching!
Much to our surprise, some of our guinea fowls have hatched already! As of Monday morning, two of them have broken out of their eggs. We still have six eggs in the incubator and we are hoping to find more of the guinea fowls hatching soon! To view the guinea fowls from home, click here!

Service Hours for Teens
Are you a teen looking for community service hours? The Homer Library has several options for possible volunteer opportunities. Teens can choose to do a project (alone or as a group) as part of our Volunteer Corps. Possible projects include storytime preparation, fundraising projects, planning for Teen Tech Week, and more. For more information, inclusing a complete list of project proposals, click here. Teens can also volunteer to help with a holiday fundraiser at the library. We have opportunities for teens to create gift bags and wrap presents in December (from Dec 9-19, except Fridays; times vary and are listed on the registration form). Thank You!
The library would like to extend our thanks to the members of the 501st Legion Midwest Garrison whose members attended last week's Star wars event. They came as Stormtroopers, X-Wing Pilots, R2D2, and more! The program was a great success, with over 75 children (many in full Star Wars costumes themselves!) filling the library and having Star Wars-inspired fun. Thanks to everyone who participated in this awesome event!

Calling all Jedis! This event is a celebration of the Star Wars universe! Star Wars characters will be here from the 501st LEGION MIDWEST GARRISON. Have your picture taken with Star Wars characters (make sure to bring your camera). Wear a Star Wars costume for our contest judged by our Galactic visitors. (contest for children through age 12). Guinea Fowl Eggs are Here!
We had such a great time hosting the baby chicks earlier this year that we are doing a similiar project again! A local Homer Glen farmer brought us 8 Guinea fowl eggs to incubate. Guinea fowl do not normally lay eggs in the fall. The eggs like a warm and quiet setting, so the incubator is set at 99 degrees. There is a 28 day incubation, so if the hatch is successful we should see Keets (which are baby guineas) by Halloween! To view the eggs from home, click here!

Magic Treehouse (Polish Program) -- Wednesday, October 6th at 6:30pm
Do you like traveling through time and around the world? Join Jack and Annie Travel Pals for a fun filled adventure, exciting games and your own Master Librarian card. This program will be in Polish and English.

Culture Club: Hawaii -- Saturday, October 9th from 10-12pm
Aloha! Visit a tropical paradise that is home to the world's most active volcano, sandy beaches and lush valleys! Dress Hawaiian style and join us for this cultural experience. Grades 3 and up. Registration required.

Upcoming! Teen Open House!
We are excited to announce that our second annual Teen Open House will take place on Tuesday, October 19th from 6-8:30pm! Teens are invited to hang out at the library and take part in a bunch of activities such as decorating a sweet treat, spinning the krazy wheel, eating yummy pizza, and rocking out to local band When In Doubt! We will also be doing a 60 Second Showdown (based on the TV series Minute to Win It!) that teens can participate in or watch. To participate, teens must fill out a registration form in advance and turn it in at the library. Please note that only the first 24 teens will be allowed to take part in the showdown, so please sign up early. For more information (including the 60 Second Showdown registration form), click here! Summer is almost over and you know what that means -- the return of Sunday hours at the library! Starting September 12th, the library is open from 4-8pm. Used Book Sale: A Success!
We would like to extend a hearty thanks to all of those involved in making our 3rd annual Used Book Sale a success! This year's sale was the best yet -- we raised $2,100 for the library! Thank you goes out to the patrons who donated boxes and bags full of materials, teens who volunteered to organize the books and help at the sale, and the people who purchased all of those books! A special thanks also to the teens who helped create the beautiful beaded bookmarks that were sold. We look forward to next year's Used Book Sale and hope you do too!

How to Win Sweepstakes -- Monday, August 16th at 7pm
In 20 years of sweepstaking, Cindy Sykora has won over and over! Cindy and her family have own trips, merchandise, a new car, a landscaping makeover, and $10,000 in gas cards. She will share her tips and strategies for winning and also discuss safeguarding yourself against scams.

ESL Parent Workshop -- Tuesday, August 17th at 7pm
This presentation will provide ways for non-English speaking parents to help their K-3 children better learn and succeed, especially in the area of reading. Parents will walk away with a deeper understanding of how their children learn to read and specific tools to help in their learning. Presenters Lauren Pisano and Michelle Manzo-Slaveiro are teacher/instructors at Walsh School in Summit, IL. Ms. Pisano provides workshops in her district to help parents incorporate literacy in their homes. Ms. Manzo-Slaveiro has worked as an ESL teacher for the past 8 years. Funding for this grant was awarded by the IL State Library (ISL), a Department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSATA).

Booktalk with Anderson's Bookstore -- Wednesday, August 18th at 7pm
Kathleen March from Anderson’s Bookshop will booktalk what new in children’s literature. This session is worth 1 CPDU. Funding for this grant was awarded by the IL State Library (ISL), a Department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSATA).

ELL Teacher Workshop -- Thursday, August 19th at 7pm
This presentation will provide best practices for teaching K-3 English Language Learners, along with meaningful activities that can be taken right into the classroom. We will also lead a discussion on how best to communicate with culturally diverse families in order to fully meet students’ needs. CPDU's for this program will be available. Used Book Sale
Our annual Used Book Sale is quickly approaching! We are accepting donations from August 3-12 during library hours. We accept books, music, and movies. Unfortunately, we cannot accept magazines, Reader's Digest Condensed, encyclopedias, or damaged items. There is a preview sale for Friends of the Library members on Thursday, August 12th from 5-8:30pm. The sale is open to the public on Friday, August 13th from 9am-4pm; on Saturday, August 14th from 9am-3:30pm; and on Monday, August 16th from 9am-3pm. Hope to see you there!

Teen Book Club -- Tuesday, July 13th at 7pm
Join us for the next meeting of the Teen Book Club! This month's selection, The Alchemyst by Michael Scott, came from the suggestion of one of our regular members. We've already been hearing feedback at the library that this book is super awesome, so our discussion should be exciting! For teens in 6th grade and up.

Book Buddies -- Wednesday, July 7th and July 14th
If you are registered for Book Buddies, don't forget our Wednesday night meetings! Teen volunteers will act as reading buddies to young children, and after we'll make a craft! Registration required.

Reading With Rex -- Thursday, July 8th from 10:30-12pm
This literacy improvement program uses certified therapy dogs to help children gain confidence and boost their reading skills by reading out loud to a non-judmental dog. Another session of Reading With Rex will be held on Thursday, July 22nd.

Monday Movie Matinee -- Monday, July 12th at 1pm

Mad Hatter Party -- Tuesday, July 13th at 2pm
Don’t be late for a very important date! Jump down the rabbit hole and be prepared for a wild adventure. Tea and crumpets anyone? For kids ages 8 and up. Registration required.

Rock'n Under the Big Top -- Thursday, July 15th at 10am
Join us for musical fun as we move and groove with music, instruments, movement, and parachute activity. A small snack will be served. For kids ages 3-6. Registration required.

Rock Climbing Wall -- Friday, July 16th from 10-2pm
Come in and climb the wall if you dare! Weight restrictions are from 40 to 250 lbs. Parental permission required. Permission forms are available at the library and must be filled out at the time of registration. Due to the form, registration for this program cannot be done online. To register, please visit the childrens' department.

Superhero Hype -- Saturday, July 17th from 10:30am-12pm
Come to the library dressed as your favorite super hero. Join us for an action packed hero party that will include super power snacks, a super x-ray vision game and super hero cartoon. For kids ages 7-10. Registration required.

Water Conservation -- Monday, June 21st at 7pm
The Conservation@Homer program helps homeowners use sustainable practices to conserve water resources! We need to reduce the amount of pure drinking water we are pouring on our lawns. By planting more native plants that do not need to be watered and catching rain in rain barrels we can significantly reduce the watering needed in our yards as well as increase habitat for birds and butterfl ies. Come and see how easy it is to make your yard more eco-friendly!

UPCOMING! Easy as ABC -- Tuesday, July 27th from 9:30-11am
Do you want to add pizazz and spark to your literacy activities? Come to a workshop that will provide experiences to make reading and writing meaningful and fun in your classroom and at home. Activities and a make–&-take will provide a variety of ways to encourage an interest in literacy! The focus of this workshop will be on children 3-5 years old. Adaptations will be suggested for children with special needs. Presented by Nancy Pufahl and Becky Handler.

This program will focus on teaching parents how to help your child if you are not an English speaker, fluency strategies, and comprehension strategies. This program will be held outdoors (weather permitting), so please dress accordingly! Teens do not have to be an Energy participant to attend. Space for each session is limited and registration is required. Also, because this is an outdoor activity, each teen must bring two signed waivers (one from Iron Oaks and one from the library) with them in order to participate. Finals Destination! -- Monday-Thursday, May 24-27, from 4-8:30pm

Applications for the Homer Library's Teen Intern Program are available now! This year the applications are available online. Please note that there are two separate forms: a general application form and a reading desk schedule. If you are interested in staffing the reading desk, please make sure that you fill out both forms!

The Teen Intern Program is open to teens in 6th grade and up (as of Fall 2010). Shifts are usually limited to 1-3 hours per week and schedules are on a first come, first served basis. Please choose your schedule carefully, as changes will not be considered until June 10th. Applicants will be notified of their schedule by phone or email on June 9th, 2010.

Starting our 5th Year of Bookmobile Service!

Happy Birthday, Bookmobile!

We are celebrating our bookmobile service which brings library outreach, services and materials directly into our extensive Homer community.

Come visit the bookmobile at Dellwood Park on Friday, June 11 from 10:30-2:30 along with many other awesome vehicles at the TOUCH A TRUCK DAY.

The bookmobile is a fine example of an innovative service that without grant support could not have been undertaken. Our bus is simply amazing and I hope you will see (and enjoy!) it first-hand.

What's new on the bus?
Bookmobile Manager Jody Olivieri and library staff have done an outstanding job to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Rolling Library usage continues to rise thanks to all of YOU. This summer the bookmobile will be undertaking new stops at Saddlewood Estates, Woodbine West and Pebble Creek. We will also be featuring Stories in the Park and a Summer Reading Club as well as other Summer Fun events!

Join us for a series of fun teambuilding challenges with other teens! We'll be doing a series of activities that require teamwork, trust, communication, and problem-solving skills (kind of like the TV show Survivor, without being stuck on an island). This event will be held outdoors (weather permitting). Presented by Iron Oaks Environmental Learning Center. Waivers must be signed by a parent or guardian, so advance registration is required.

National Library Week Fine Forgiveness: April 11-17th
To celebrate National Library Week, from April 11-17th the Homer Township Library will offer amnesty on fines. Fines will be waived on all overdue items belonging to the Homer Township Public Library District. Patrons can discreetly return items in the book drops outside even when the library is closed. The goals of this program include: getting long overdue items back, bringing missing patrons back into the library, and making items available for other people. Late fees up to $20.00 will be forgiven during the week. Amnesty does not apply to lost or damaged items or out-of-system interlibrary loan items.

Chick It Out!: The Eggs Are Coming!
The Homer Library is excited to announce Chick It Out, a unique library event featuring the incubation and hatching of live chicks! Beginning April 20th, patrons can visit the library to see the eggs in the incubator or view our 24 hour live webcam from our website. Patrons can also participate in programs celebrating Chick It Out!, including these eggs-cellent events:

4/20: The arrival of the eggs! Don't miss the special delivery! An exact time of delivery will be announced in the next few days.
4/20: All ages kids chick craft at 4:30pm. Make a chick card!

More programs are being added to the schedule for this year's session of Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy! We are excited to have additional programs for Energy teens to attend and we'll be announcing them soon. To apply for Energy, interested teens can pick one up at the library or print one out from home by clicking here. This award-winning academy aims to help create youth leaders who will assume leadership roles throughout the community. Teens will commit to attending three library programs (on topics such as college preparation and communication skills) and fulfill a service requirement at the library. Participation in this academy will look impressive on college applications and resumes, and it's also fun! Energy teens will also get priority regarding summer volunteer hours. Energy is open to teens in grades 9-12. Applicants do not have to be residents of Homer Township. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2009.

Nutrition for Kids -- Thursday, February 4th at 7pm

Looking for new ways to prepare delicious meals for your children that are actually good for them? Tracey Cicirale will present a program on how to prepare school lunches packed with nutrition. Register at (708) 301-7908.

Letters to the Troops

Throughout the month of February, the library is collecting letters to send to American troops stationed overseas. Blank forms (for children to use and decorate) are available at the library, although adults are welcome to write letters using their own stationary as well. Taking a few minutes to write a letter can make someone's day a bit brighter! Thank you for participating in this project and supporting our troops.

Energy 2010: A Teen Leadership Academy

Applications are now available for the 2010 session of Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy! Interested teens can pick one up at the library or print one out from home by clicking here. This award-winning academy aims to help create youth leaders who will assume leadership roles throughout the community. Teens will commit to attending three library programs (on topics such as college preparation and communication skills) and fulfill a service requirement at the library. Participation in this academy will look impressive on college applications and resumes, and it's also fun! Energy is open to teens in grades 9-12. Applicants do not have to be residents of Homer Township. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2009.

Career Assistance Workshop
The library will be holding a Career Assistance Workshop on Saturday, February 20, 2010. The event, which features multiple speakers, will cover topics such as interview and resume preparation, networking skills, government employment opportunities, and job searching. This is an ideal program for those who are unemployed or are interested in transitioning to a new career. Attendees do not have to be residents of Homer Township. The workshop is from 9am - 1pm and light refreshments will be served. To register, call the library at (708) 301-7908.

In celebration of Library Lover's Month, Homer Township Public Library will be partnering with local area restaurants to raise funds for programs and new collections at your library! Just visit Mimi's Café in Orland Park on Monday, February 8th from 4-8 pm and show our fundraiser voucher. Or visit Chesdan's in Homer Glen on Monday, February 15th and show your library card! Get together with some friends and enjoy a delicious pizza on your day off of school! You can also visit Chili's in Homer Glen on any Friday in the month of February and show our fundraiser voucher.
